I have been inspired to challenge the conventional idea of a self-portrait by means of a psycho-geographical approach. This meant observing my reactions in response to different places and situations. I have always engaged with the environment as my training in landscape design has imprinted a habit of looking and thinking about everything I see around me in a specific way. I have discovered that my ‘inner’ person and my ‘outer’ person are very different things and that the world around me can both intimidate and conversely make me happy. I crave moments when my two (or more) ‘selves’ can be in balance and help me make sense of the madness of the world and what it is to be a human being. Changes in the way I work have happened recently. Using video, ‘found’ sounds, speech and objects, music performance, all playing a larger role than more traditional media used in the past.
I approach the subject in an experiential, intuitive and interactive way, gravitating towards different media, environments and processes, setting myself a rule to make work every day. I began by fundamentally altering previous un-loved work with paint or fire, to generate an often uncomfortable reaction in myself.
‘i am the project’ aims to communicate some of these transformations in a way the viewer can engage with, as we all have experienced periods of change and undergo emotional upheaval at some time in our lives. Working in this new way allows more expression and has helped open up fundamentally new ideas about my practice.
